Growing calls to halt the race towards superintelligence without safety guarantees

Published: September 2025 · initiative still active

What happened

The statement promoted by the Future of Life Institute calls for not proceeding with the development of superintelligence in the absence of two conditions: broad scientific consensus that it can be built safely and controllably, and strong public consensus.

The initiative has gathered signatures from scientists and figures with very different positions, and remains open.

Why it matters

It does not mean being against artificial intelligence: it means asking that the capacity to control a technology grow alongside its power.

What we know — and what we still don't

To be verified / still uncertain
