ProblemThe global plastics treaty remains stuck on key sticking points
Published: 13 August 2026
What happened
International negotiations for a global agreement against plastic pollution continue to face strong disagreement, particularly on production, chemicals and binding measures.
The previous negotiating round failed to reach an agreement, and the path towards a global deal remains difficult.
Why it matters
It shows in concrete terms one of the central problems No-Extinction deals with: even when a problem is recognized as global, differing national and economic interests can make it extremely difficult to agree on a common response.
